On October 31, 1517, an unknown Augustinian friar named Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, sparking the Reformation.
Martin Luther (1483-1546) is now famous for many reasons. For example, he is the hinge between the medieval and the modern world. He is the pioneer of many of the political freedoms we enjoy. He is the father of the German nation and language. But Luther saw himself much more narrowly as a theologian, a term he took quite literally—one qualified to speak about God. Through his own study of the Bible, Luther discovered to the delight of his deeply troubled conscience, that the theology of his own day was exactly upside-down. God hides Himself from the proud reason of men in order to reveal Himself as Savior to sinners in one place only—the cross of Christ. Luther’s controversial, exciting discovery captured the imagination of his own day, swept through Europe, and changed the world.
The conference was held on October 31, 2016 for an evening to commemorate the 499th anniversary of the Reformation, and to learn about its history and the theology which caused it.
Martin Luther, the Reformation, and the Heidelberg Disputation
7:30-8:15pm “The Life of Martin Luther” Listen
This talk will be an overview that touches the high points of Luther’s life from his birth in 1483 to his death in 1546. One particular episode in Luther’s life will be emphasized: the Heidelberg Disputation of 1518.

This talk will present and summarize the 28 Theological Theses that Luther presented and argued at the Heidelberg Disputation of 1518. These 28 Theses are not as well-known as the 95 Theses that Luther famously nailed to the door, but they much more profoundly trace out Luther’s theological outlook that guided him for the rest of his life.
